Insights and Perspectives

During the past 2 years, the market for art- level 19th century rugs and carpets has been dominated by specialist collectors who view these artefacts as “undiscovered art”. As shrewd investors, they are aware that they can build museum quality collections at a fraction of the price of other forms of art and antiquities.

"These rugs are phenomenal art, but they are not priced anything like what they’re really worth. They are not recognised yet......Some day, not that far in the future, they’ll take off the way paintings have"

- Jon Schreiber, Collector

The scarcity of investment-grade art-level rugs has led to some collectors stockpiling rugs when they come onto the open market for sale. As investors increasingly recognise their attractive risk/return characteristics, they have become more coveted as an investment class.

Although there has historically been a demand for antique carpets that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for antique carpets of a particular area or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
