Collecting
Collector's Corner

In his excellent book, By Appointment Only, outlining his experiences as an auction house specialist and art dealer, Walter Feilchenfeldt identifies several types of art dealer:

The Dealer – main interest being the value and saleability of the work. Will deal in any work that seems financially profitable.

The Promoter – deals in contemporary art. Interest lies in the artist as much as in the art. Does not enter the market, but creates it.

The Collector – cares for the single art  work, which he evaluates from the point of view of a collector. Every work or object must reach his particular level of quality.

Art Market “ISMs”

The four types of “ism” in the art market derive from :
  • A trend within the visual arts

  • A broad cultural trend

  • Artist-defined movement

  • Retrospectively applied label

Although historically the value of most works of art has risen over long-term periods, there have been periods where this has not been the case. There is no guarantee that the art market will continue to rise in the future.
