High quality porcelain wares have proven to be a great store of value over the years. The 300-year old porcelain manufacturer Meissen was taken over by the former East German communist government after World War II. Eventually, the government earned considerable money from selling the porcelain to the West during the Cold War.

It is rumoured that American singer Bruce Springsteen was paid partly in Meissen for a concert in East Berlin in 1988.

"Shares and money lose value but porcelain doesn't. It's always got a fundamental worth and can even be used as currency."

- Hans Benemann, Porcelain Assessor

Although there has historically been a demand for ceramics that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for ceramics of a particular area or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
