Collecting
Collector's Corner

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor shared a passion for jewellery and collected and commissioned many pieces throughout their life together. In 1987 the Duchess’ jewellery collection was auctioned off at Sotheby’s. One piece in particular, a 206.82 carat sapphire pendant created by Cartier in 1951, was due to be included in the well publicised auction. However, the owner decided he could not part with the piece. Since then few pieces have come up for auction again.

A strand of pearls, previously owned by the Duchess of Windsor and then by Calvin Klein, was sold in December 2007 at a Sotheby’s New York sale. The necklace made by Cartier was estimated to sell for between $1.5 to $2 million but eventually sold for $3.6 million.

Vintage jewellery
Although there has historically been a demand for vintage jewellery that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for vintage jewellery of a particular type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
