Collecting
Insights and Perspectives

The valuation and pricing of antique maps is a function of the regional content of the map, the map maker, the age of the map, it’s size, rarity, decorative quality, condition and the importance of its content to collectors. While there is no set formula, each of these factors plays a role in pricing and valuation.

Certain maps have very mature and efficient markets. Maps by Blaeu, Ortelius, Hondius, Mercator and the other highly collected maps from prior to 1700 have been prized by collectors for many decades.

Because pricing is largely a function of supply and demand, newly interested areas and under-appreciated themes see strong increases in value, as more collectors become interested.

Antique world map
Although there has historically been a demand for map & atlases that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for map & atlases of a particular area or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
