Magnificent Maps at the British Library
The British Library will host an exhibition "Magnificent Maps: Power, Propaganda and Art," opening on 30 April 2010. The show includes 100 out of some 4.5 million maps from the British Library cartographic reserves - the world's largest map collection.  The majority of the collection is acknowledged as the most impressive ever created.  - Art Daily

One of the largest collections of rare and historical maps in America is being donated by a California real estate developer to Stanford University. David Rumsey, who has spent 30 year amassing the huge collection of 150,000 maps, has created one of the premier cartographic collections of American history in the United States. By giving the physical maps, their digital images and his database to Stanford, Mr. Rumsey hopes to encourage other donors to give their original pieces along with digital copies at the same time.

Most of the maps in his collection were drawn between 1700 and 1925 and includes the rare Lewis & Clark map used during their journey through the upper Missouri and into Oregon published in 1814.

A wealthy businessman has been sentenced to two years in prison in England for slicing out pages and maps from rare books in the British Library. According to the media, he is a published author, a collector of rare books and described as extremely knowledgeable. The stolen pages and maps centred around the engagement by Western European travellers with Mesopotamia, Persia and the Mogul empire.

Although there has historically been a demand for map & atlases that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for map & atlases of a particular area or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
