Antique maps have a finite supply. According to MapWorld, the London based map marketers, about 80% of the world’s antique maps have been destroyed over the years through fires, floods and natural disasters. And another 60% of the remaining 20% in circulation that have survived are held in public collections which makes supply that bit more constrained. This has meant that prices have escalated sharply in recent years.

In earlier times, dealers of rare maps and atlases preached condition and old colour as the most important factors to be considered by a collector.

As the economic status and financial ranking of many countries throughout the world improves, this triggers an increasing demand for antique maps of these countries, from both private collectors and institutions.

Although there has historically been a demand for map & atlases that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for map & atlases of a particular area or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
