Newsworthy Items

A rare map of early Canada attracted heated bidding in November at Sotheby’s in London when it sold for three times it’s estimated price. Drawn by French Explorer Samuel de Champlain, Sotheby’s marketed the rarity as “the most important single map in the history of Canada” and “a foundation document for Canada”.

The auction house had estimated that the large, finely engraved document – drawn in 1612 – would sell for as much as $75,000. The price realised was $235,000.
