In 2007, the Fine Violin Fund was launched by Florian Leonhard, an expert in string instruments, with a target of €60 million. The fund is structured as a 3-5 year vehicle, plans to invest in pre-19th century violins and expects to achieve a 15% rate of return. The Fine Violin Fund announced in March 2009 that it had been successful in raising €15 million.

Anchorage Capital Partners launched a closed-end fund which will invest in the rare and vintage guitar market. The target is to raise $100 million and is to be listed on the Channel Island Stock Exchange in Euros for a 10-year term.

"Today they are not simply musical instruments but financial instruments that are currently outperforming the moribund financial markets. Musical instruments today make sound financial sense.”

Although there has historically been a demand for musical instruments that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for musical instruments of a particular type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
