Biblical coins on display
Ancient coins depicting the symbols of Pontius Pilate and King Herod, similar to those used by Judas to betray Jesus, are going to be displayed at the Azaea Festival Coin Show (North Carolina, US) early in April.  Coins issued around B.C. and A.D. still circulate in the market, although they are extremely rare, as a large number of those items are kept in museums and banks.

Rare coin sells for over $3.7 Million at auction

A 1913 US Liberty nickle, one of only five known and once owned by Egyptian king was sold in a heated bidding war in Miami January 2010.  Collectors, in their enthusiasm to obtain rare coins have push the price well over its 2003 Million dollar milestone.

Heritage Auction Galleries announced that sales from its recent Signature® US Coin Auction, held 27th – 31st March 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland, exceeded $14 million. The sums are in line with the auction house’s estimates and another sign that the rare coin market is holding up amidst the poor economic climate. The highlight of the sale was this 1795 $10 13 Leaves MS63 PCGS which sold for $322,000, good short-term appreciation from when it last sold for $201,250 in January 2007.

On 6th November, a rare 1755 Russian 20 Rouble gold coin fetched £1.78 million, a world record for a coin sold at auction.

The coin was once owned by Grand Duke Georgii Mikhailovich, a 19th Century member of the Russian royal family. The previous record price for a non-US coin is $1.38 million, which was achieved by a 1621 Polish 100 ducats. Prices of Russian and Polish coins are very strong at the moment.

Although there has historically been a demand for rare coins that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for coins of a particular area, issue or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
