Coins declared as treasure
A collection of gold coins and torcs found in Norfolk between 2003 and 2006 was officially declared as treasure (March 26, 2010) at an inquest headed by Greater Norfolk coroner William Armstrong.  According to the World Gold Council, The British Museum characterised the collection as “incredibly interesting.”  Some of the coins date back to the Bronze Age and have been officially been declared as treasure.  The coins were found by a metal detectorist. - The World Gold Council.

Rare coins resilient to downturn
An article from The Times reported that coins have been untouched by the economic downturn and that demand remains high for those in excellent condition. English medieval gold coins remain the most sought-after genre.

The strength of the world coin market was again in evidence at Heritage Auction Galleries on the occasion of its Signature Auction of Ancient and World Coins at NYINC in January 2009.

This marked Heritage Auction’s seventh official NYINC (New York International Numismatic Convention) event, featuring nearly 3000 lots of ancient and world coins from over 200 consignors. The auction was strengthened by several impressive specialty collections. The top lot in the auction at $109,250 was a unique ancient silver coin of Hadrian Augustus (minted A.D. 135-137).

Prices of Russian and Eastern European coins have surged recently as more wealthy collectors look to this sector as a store of long-term wealth creation and preservation.

Old coins

Although there has historically been a demand for rare coins that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for coins of a particular area, issue or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
