Traditionally, philatelists collected stamps by the country from which they were issued. These days thematic collecting is taking place, often reaching beyond stamps to coins and other Emotional Assets that fit a specific theme, for example an era in history. Following are a few examples of the thematic collecting popular today.

Although there has historically been a demand for rare stamps that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for stamps of a particular area, issue or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
