Bill Gross, founder of PIMCO, one of the world's largest money managers, sold his collection of rare British Empire stamps for nearly $1.5 million in October 2008.

In 2007, Mr. Gross sold his British stamps for more than $9m, after buying them for around $2m in the year 2000. The return on investment was higher than that of Mr. Gross’ Pimco total return bond fund over the same period.

Mr. Gross donated the proceeds of both sales to charity.

Although there has historically been a demand for rare stamps that exceeds supply, causing substantial increases in value, there is no guarantee that this will be the case in the future. Demand for stamps of a particular area, issue or type may be affected by regional or world trends and tastes.
