The market in collectible watches has evolved since the early 1980s, when watch collecting was mainly a hobby. The interest in watch collecting today has been stimulated by the recognition that the best watches increase their value over time.
In 2007, the market for collectible watches generated $200 million in sales, more than twice the amount generated in 2003.
Although it is difficult to say precisely what determines the value of a particular watch, experts point out that a piece must strike a perfect balance of rarity, originality, authenticity, and aesthetic quality.
A watch’s value can be doubled if it is sold with its original wristband, buckle, presentation case and its original documentation.
